About a week ago FunnyJunk threatened The Oatmeal and to do so they engaged a lawyer, to which The Oatmeal responded with a humorous charity action. I thought that was quite funny, interesting and even a nice thing to do. ...

The thing is I just read this interview of Carreon, FunnyJunk's lawyer. what's interesting is that Carreon has since received threats, his website got attacked and people impersonated him on twitter or email etc etc.

IMHO alert: I think he's probably wrong in accusing The Oatmeal's Inman as having coordinated or even encouraged such behavior. What seems to be more likely is that a bunch of stupid angry people saw this as an opportunity to attack someone on a personal level without feeling too much guilt.

I guess some (many?) of those who read The Oatmeal's response do not understand humor, did not understand the real message and are just happy to have a pretext to be assholes. They also did not comprehend that the real issue is between FunnyJunk and the Oatmeal.

FunnyJunk, a website whose main "about us" link is a Copyright Infringement Notification page, has hired an "Internet lawyer" to put pressure on TheOatmeal to remove any content that speaks of them.

FunnyJunk just realised their SEO is really bad, when you search for them TheOatmeal comes up in the results, since the story broke it's even worse. Instead of re-thinking their SEO they decided to threaten TheOatmel and get them to remove any content referring to them. One of the things FunnyJunk doesn't find funny is:

2. Host them on FunnyJunk.com
3. Slather them in advertising
4. If someone claims copyright infringement, throw your hands up in the air and exclaim "It was our users who uploaded your photos! We had nothing to do with it! We're innocent!"
5. Cash six figure advertising checks from other artist's stolen material

When non US citizens face US charges and extradition how can people who operate sites like FunnyJunk feel so legitimate that they start to attack the websites from which they steal content from ? Just saying, it's messed up.
