Broken Design - Sink

Published by manu

This sink's design is broken in at least 2 ways.

Sink, or waterfall ?

This sink was installed only a few months ago in a high tech low spec building, yet the hot and cold water are distributed in 2 separate faucets. In the year 2011 you still have to chose between burning or freezing your hands every time you wash. Whoever designed this obviously isn't big on post-toilet hygiene.

The other issue, again if you use such a device, is the room left for you to maneuver your hands while washing.. . Actually, just trying to collect water is difficult, you find yourself constantly hitting the back of the sink with your hands.

Debian Patch for Apache Killer

The past week has left 65% of the Interweb (the part of the Internet that cat lovers use most) was trembling with great ph34r as CVE-2011-3192 has been out there causing people to pull their hair out while coming up with RewriteRules that could save the day while we wait the "in 48 hours fix" which just didn't come in time...

Well actually, I personally didn't mind as a little DDOS would have just given me an excuse to just shut down the web server for a few days and use my bike a bit more...

In any case, I don't know about your favorite distribution, buy mine has just released an official patch that also addresses another issue...

So voila, update/upgrade your Debian server and you can now sleep tight, that was the last vulnerability for Apache for *ever*.

Over and over again corporations have been trying to control the Internet and make it their product and governments have been trying to make it their terrain. Meanwhile many, the masses, think it's fine, nothing wrong with any of this People like shiny new products and the government is just trying to protect it's people (just like in Libya, Egypt, Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, China, etc etc).. . ..

Since the UK riots, the UK prime minister, David Cameron, would like to have a red button that can shut down "social media" in case. In case his subjects through a fit or something. A red button that can shut down Twitter, Facebook, Blackberry Messenger and probably everything I guess because.. I mean.. wait, maybe he doesn't know about the other websites and services that exist, lets not tell him.

Not so long after that, like a few days ago, during an attempted protest in San Francisco, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) cut off access to the mobile phone network. So, no protest, no problems. No problems at all.

Of course Anonymous played around with the BART's website and exposed how securely they store their user's data. However, penetrating websites and exposing data, flaws, etc is just not going to be enough, BART probably does not care, they will reset their passwords, apologise to their clients and move on. As for the incident, they gave a nice explanation for their actions.

Maybe I'm just getting too paranoid, I mean, communications are private and nobody reads your emails, chat sessions and SMSes right ? Of course not, but still, police arrest a man for organising a water fight via Blackberry Messenger! A water fight !? And how did they know ... .

Maybe because Blackberry has agreed to help the police and has probably opened their doors wide open so the government can investigate on the riots. And on anything else they seem to stumble on. Like water fights ?! I still can't believe this.

Many have been comparing the looting and riots to the Arab Spring, obviously that is stupid as the UK's citizens have so much freedom compared to any Arab Spring affected country. That being said, as they are fighting and gaining freedom, others are getting very close to losing it.

Maybe we will all soon be dreaming of escaping to North Korea.

Today I saw something interesting. An advertisement in the London Underground.

You will know me

This is what is says:

You Don't Know Me

You don't know anything about me. You don't know
what I'm made of or just how much I'm capable of.
You don't know where I've come from nor where
I'm heading. You know nothing of my highs or my lows.
You don't know how fast I am, how strong I am,
how resilient I am. You haven't got a clue what
breakfast cereal I eat, what fragrance I wear or
who I'm dating. You don't even know my name.

But you will

So I read it, and then think... hmmmmm.. The message, in short is that the games will be around soon and in those games will be new competitors that you do not know of... And they will make so much noise that you will know them.

What actually strikes me is that this person who is able to run fast, jump high or be a precise badminton player has announced their purpose in life very clearly:

  • Sell breakfasts
  • Promote perfumes
  • Feed the gossip industry

Whoever makes the most noise, will be in many adverts ... . . in 2012. I hope they're photogenic.. (of course they will be).

Cleanfeed

Cleanfeed is the system BT (British Telecom) has set up a few years ago. It's main goal is to block content to sites listed on the Internet Watch Foundation’s “Child Abuse Images” database.

As of a few days ago BT will now be obliged to use their Cleanfeed system to block Newzbin2.

So I found this page called Cleanfeed: the facts which explains what Cleanfeed is supposed to be.

A few interesting points:

If the URL of the web request exactly matches a URL in the database BT impersonates the destination web server and returns a HTTP 404 status code, which will cause a web browser to display a “Not found” message to the user.

Blocked website Saudi Arabia - Source Wikinews It's interesting because even in Saudi Arabia they inform users when they are blocked by government filtering.

Cleanfeed will not block web traffic carried over any port other than port 80

As a matter of fact, Cleanfeed will not block anything that is not specifically HTTP over port 80, in other words ONLY non-encrypted standard web content.

BT does not log the IP addresses of users whose traffic is an attempt to reach a listed URL.

Impressive. Believe ?

Scope creep is a serious risk
  • The Home Office originally indicated to BT that Cleanfeed might be employed to block access to other undesirable content
  • Wannadoo has already been approached by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) about implementing a system similar to Cleanfeed so as to block access to works allegedly infringing copyright.
  • BT says that if the pressure to extend the scope of Cleanfeed became too great it would simply cancel the project.

It can seem as if BT does not want to filter such content (alleged copyrighted stuff), probably not so much for ethical reasons as much as technical and commercial reasons, indeed, if BT is now the only ISP that has to block Newzbin2.... .. .

So, will BT cancel the project ?

Stop Filesharing (and Stop Watching Crap)

A victory for the creative industry, finally. A British court has ruled that BT (British Telecom) must block access to Newzbin2 (if you can't access it check via Herdict).

Some say this is good news for the audiovisual entertainment industry as they will finally be able to pay their bills and such. Indeed it is well known that the industry behind the MPA (Motion Picture Association) have been in complete financial decline since the popularisation of the Internet.. check the numbers. They have been selling approximately the same amount of tickets every year for the past 15 years yet the revenue has doubled, that means they are doing bad right ?

Others say this is an attack on our Freedom of w4r3z.. .. People need w4r3z, that's why the Internet was invented.

And others, more seriously, point out the issues between having ISPs enforce content filtering, websites being blocked more and more easily, innocent bystanders... and websites getting blocked for "copyright" reasons when it will in reality be for other reasons, like political for example.

Worse comes to worse, they block all of this stuff from the Internets and people will have no choice but to do other things with their lives. I think that because I doubt people will spend more on music and movies than they already do. Because people already spend a lot of money as it is..
